Is the LCMS a Cult?

Cult mind control is a topic that has recently been popping up more and more in my YouTube feed. This is thanks to my recent subscription to Telltale Atheist, an ex-Jehovah’s Witness atheist YouTuber who examines cults and oppressive religions. He often uses a method called the BITE Model to determine whether different groups are cults, but he is most familiar with his own former cult, the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Matt Walsh is Being Persecuted

This week, I finally did something I have been wanting to do for a long time: I put “atheist” on my Facebook profile. It was less of a dramatic coming-out than I had anticipated; to see it, you would have to go to my profile and scroll through my “About” section and find it listed under “religious views”. I could have made it into a post that will show up in people’s News Feeds, but I didn’t find that necessary. I did, however, follow a number of atheist pages, and maybe one day I’ll share some of their posts for all my friends to see.

Lutheran Creation Doctrine: Young Earth Creationism

First of all, thank all of you so much for finally helping this blog reach 1,000 WordPress followers! I started it two years ago not knowing if anyone would read what I had to say, but I have come a long way since then, and I can’t wait to see what the future will bring for the Closet Atheist blog.

So last night, my husband and I cuddled up in bed and started scrolling through Netflix. We ended up playing a movie that we couldn’t tell if it was from a Christian perspective or an atheist perspective, so we just went for it and watched the whole thing. Well, of course it ended up being not only Christian, but actually endorsed by Ken Ham (did I mention he blocked me on Twitter? Because he did!) and centered around a false dichotomy of Christianity vs. evolution.

10 More Atheist YouTube Videos

Hello! You may or may not know that I am, and always have been, a big fan of YouTubers. Last January, I shared with you fifteen of my husband’s and my favorite atheist YouTube videos in order to take a break from all my coming-out horror stories. Well, I’m not having any coming-out drama anymore, but I’ve gotten back into watching lots of atheist YouTube again after taking a short break, so I’m taking this chance to keep you updated on what some of my recent favorites have been. Lutheran Creation Doctrine: Introduction

As you may know, a while ago my pastor-in-law informed me and my fiance that he had found this blog. The following conversation was interesting, of course, but it probably went about as well as it could have. I took this opportunity of openly talking about our beliefs to ask him a few questions, as well. I’d always been under the impression that the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod was a strict believer in young-earth creationism stemming from a literal interpretation of Genesis; this had actually been one of my biggest reasons for deciding I couldn’t accept its teachings or religion at all.

The Story of Antony Flew

The first time I can recall ever hearing the name Antony Flew was in my college apologetics class. My crazy teacher, always trying to prove a point, had said something along the lines of “even this famous atheist, Antony Flew, changed his mind and now believes in God! That proves that God exists!” My inward reaction to this was twofold: I thought, “Well, then, he must not have been a very convinced atheist” and “That invalidates any atheistic arguments that this person must have had, because in the end he himself wasn’t even convinced by them.”
